Yiayia's Koulourakia

INGREDIENTS

½ pound unsalted butter
½ pound margarine – salted
1 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
3 teaspoons almond extract
5 cups flour
Almond slivers without skin for decoration
One egg beaten to paint for color and shine.

DIRECTIONS: 

Sift together flour (and baking powder if making lighter cookies). Set aside. Cream butter and sugar. 

 

Add eggs to butter mixture.

Combine completely. Add almond extract. Add enough flour mixture to make a soft dough.

 

Stretch into a long cylinder and twist into shape.

Paint the top of cookie with beaten egg, place almond sliver point down

 

Bake at  350 for 20 to 25 minutes.
